Having just flown on Emirates’ A380 from Zurich to Dubai, I can say from personal experience that it is also an outstanding airline.  It would be great if Emirates would fly the A380 to Brazil for the FIFA World Cup™! My flight was very comfortable and it was delightful to be onboard with their helpful and friendly staff. And with such an international mix of passengers, Emirates is truly a global airline just like the global game of football. He passed through Dubai twice after that – his most recent time being just over five years ago. On this visit to Dubai, Pelé also impressed on the tremendous growth of the city and its achievements.  “Dubai has made a name for itself on the international stage. It has changed so much from when I first visited in the ‘70s.  I see a thriving city with great infrastructure for tourism and business, capable of welcoming the world and connecting with the world.  My wish is that the FIFA World Cup™ will help unleash and showcase this same potential for Brazil”, the enigmatic fooballer added.

A spectacular career saw Pelé thrive at International and club level and is recorded as the only man to lift three World Cup titles, in 1958, 1962 and 1970, the first at just 17 years old. Manmohan Singh inaugurates GVK Terminal 2at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh today inaugurated GVK’s new integrated, state-of-the-art Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in the presence of the Governor of Maharashtra, K Shankarnarayanan, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shri Ajit Singh, Union Minister for Agriculture and Food Processing, Sharad Pawar, Hon’ble Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, S Jaipal Reddy,  Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Praful Patel, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, KC Venugopal along with Executive Chairman of GVK MIAL Dr GVK Reddy and Managing Director of GVK MIAL GV Sanjay Reddy, other senior dignitaries and GVK Officials, according to a statement released by GVK.

Image
GVK has built the new integrated Terminal 2 as an iconic mega-structure (measuring 4.4 million sq. ft.) that will set global benchmarks in airport infrastructure development. Featuring a highly compact design by New York based SOM, T2 will have the ability to handle 40 million passengers annually. Traversing across four-levels, the vertical and compact design of T2 integrating all operations (International, Domestic, Cargo, Ground Handling, Security, Retail etc.) under one roof enables enhanced passenger servicing and operational efficiency of GVK CSIA.
Speaking on the occasion, GVK Reddy said: “The opening of Terminal 2 is one of the most important milestones in the history of CSIA as well as Mumbai. It is my dream to create icons which will last for generations. Over the years, we have developed expertise in executing challenging and complex infrastructure projects. GVK’s vision is to be pioneer and best in all the sectors we operate in. GVK’s initiatives include setting up India’s first independent power plant, the first six-lane expressway and developing the first Brownfield airport under the Public Private Partnership model. We have raised our own benchmarks with every successive endeavour. Terminal 2 reiterates our commitment towards building a better India for the present as well as for future generations and this would not have been possible without the unstinted support of our partners, associates and all my colleagues”. The Rs 5,500 crore cost incurred by GVK in building T2 is lowest as compared to similar airport projects in India as well as across the world. GVK constructed the new T2 in the same location of present international terminal without shutting down India’s busiest and  land-locked city airport which is the most constrained airport in the world.
Image
The new airport terminal will also be home to India’s largest public art programme, in the form of a 3 km multi-story Art Wall, illuminated by skylights, that has over 7000 pieces of artwork and artefacts from Maharashtra and also every region and corner of India. Titled Jaya He (Glory to India), it captures the expanse, depth and beauty of Indian art, craft and cultural heritage, while initiating the visitor into experiences that lie beyond and convey a distinctive narrative of India’s incredible diversity, living in multiple centuries simultaneously.
Global Economic City
Reaffirming Mumbai’s status as a global economic city, Terminal 2 is the outcome of GVK’s vision to make CSIA one of the world’s best airports that consistently delights consumers, and being the pride of Mumbai and India.  The new T2 built in 4 years, is an iconic global mega structure and India’s first and most advanced vertical passenger terminal that integrates world class design, architecture, infrastructure and operational efficiency, with a rich infusion of Indian heritage and cultural character.
All international, and later, domestic passengers will enter the new Terminal Head House on the fourth level , that is accessed by a sweeping elevated road from the Western Express Highway in only 3 minutes. At the entrance, the lanes split, making room for wide drop-off curbs with ample space for departure rituals with passengers and their guests protected from Mumbai’s heat and unpredictable monsoons, by the Head House roof that extends to cover the entire departure roadway. A 15-meter-tall cable-stayed glass wall—the longest in the world—opens to the soaring space of the check-in hall, with the transparent façade allowing accompanying well-wishers, to watch as their friends and family depart.
Image
Once inside, travelers enter the warm, open, light-filled and monumentally large check-in hall, featuring 188 + 20 check-in counters, sheltered underneath the 11-acre long-span roof, supported by an array of only 30 mushrooming multi-story mega-columns. Small disks of colorful glass recessed within the canopy’s coffers speckle the hall below with light, whose constellation of colors makes reference to The Peacock, India’s national bird, and the inspiration for the airport. After check-in, 60 emigration counters, 124 security check positions, 41 travellators, 47 escalators and 73 elevators will efficiently and swiftly process passengers for boarding.
The common check-in hall leads to a retail hub for international travelers, while domestic passengers proceed down to Level Three along the spectacular palm and waterfall gardens to their own dedicated domestic retail hub. These commercial plazas, spread over a combined area of 200,000 square feet, are centrally located at the junction of the concourses and the terminal core, to provide close proximity, to the 52 convenient departure gates for maximum passenger convenience. Level 2 is dedicated for all Arrivals with 10 fully–automatic baggage-handling carousels & 72 arrival immigration counters, while Level 1 is designed for ground transportation. Interconnecting light slots and multi-story light wells ensure that light penetrates even into the lower floors of the 4-storied mega structure, acting as a constant reminder of the surrounding city and its landscape. For the first time in India, the terminal also features an Airport Joint Control Centre that will house all stakeholders from security to airline officials & airport operations including to facilitate collaborative & speedy decision making.
GV Sanjay Reddy, Managing Director, GVK Mumbai International Airport said: “The new Terminal 2 at CSIA is a monument to the beautiful spirit of Mumbai and its people. This terminal will make CSIA a gateway to the city of Mumbai and India with international and domestic passengers. This is an airport that will redefine global benchmarks in aviation and airport development. The prevalence of local art and culture, coupled with the use of warm colours and elegant accents, elevates the ambience of this terminal beyond the typical, often unimaginative airport experience, to create a sense of place and identity that truly celebrates India”.

The design of Terminal 2 draws inspiration from India’s national bird – The Peacock It portrays the magnificent character of the White Peacock, representing flight, as well as rare beauty. The architecture of the new airport terminal quintessentially reflects India’s proud heritage and draws on its rich culture — it unmistakably and proudly presents a new contemporary India and its possibilities. Throughout T2, there are fixtures and details, such as 1000 chandeliers inspired by the lotus flower, a Diya curtain with 10,,000 diyas waiting to welcome international travelers and the check in hall which is inspired by 1000 white peacocks in the sky.

Reflecting GVK’s environment stewardship, Terminal 2 was built to be highly energy and water efficient. Sewage recycling, water recycling and rain water harvesting technologies will contribute to a 20 percent reduction in water use, over and above the Leeds baseline. Using a high-performance glazing system with a custom frit pattern, T2 achieves optimal thermal performance and mitigates glare. Perforated metal panels on the terminal’s curtain wall filter the low western and eastern sun angles, creating a comfortable day-lit space for waiting passengers, and responsive daylight controls balance outdoor and indoor light levels for optimal energy savings. Combined with strategically-placed skylights throughout the check-in hall, these will reduce T2’s energy consumption by 23%. The terminal also has a Level 2 accreditation on carbon management by ACI.

The terminal will feature a multi-level car park with the ability to handle 5200 cars making it one of the largest in the country. The car park is covered with lush landscaped gardens, providing a scenic first view for arriving and departing passengers.

The new integrated Terminal 2 will commence International operations from February 12, 2014 (within 3-4 weeks). Post today’s inauguration, the terminal will undergo a comprehensive security sweep as well as ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer). During the days preceding commissioning of the Terminal, GVK will be undertaking familiarization processes for airlines, ground handling staff, security, customs, immigration, MIAL employees etc. to get them acquainted with the new technologically advanced systems and facilities, processes for smooth and seamless transition of all stake holders from old international terminal to T2. During this time, GVK will launch an elaborate communication campaign to inform passengers about the T2’s commissioning.

IATA forecast from 2013-17 finds slower international freight growth over next five years

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) Airline Industry Forecast 2013-2017 revealed that international freight volumes are expected to grow 17 percent over the next five years, according to an official statement. This consensus outlook incorporates a conservative estimate of the recovery in global economic activity and world trade volumes over the coming years.

Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO said: “Air cargo is a key enabler for the movement of high value products and perishable goods around the globe. More than $6 trillion worth of goods is air freighted annually, accounting for around 35% of total world trade. But more recently, the relationship between international trade and GDP has broken down owing to rising trade barriers and ‘on-shoring’ of production. The successful conclusion of the World Trade Organization talks in Bali potentially could be very important in kick-starting trade growth. To be ready to take best advantage of possible opportunities, air cargo needs to work together as an industry to improve its competitiveness and enhance the quality of its service to customers”.
Forecast Highlights:
•    International freight volumes are expected to grow at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.2 percent
•    The largest (US) and the third largest (China) air freight markets in 2012 are likely to add more than one million additional tonnes each over the forecast period. As a result, China will supplant Germany as the second largest air freight market in 2017
•    Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates will both contribute more than 700,000 tonnes each to the additional freight volume during the five year period until 2017
•    The estimated imbalance in annual freight traffic flows from Asia to North America is expected to reach 1.1 million tonnes in 2017

International Freight Developments:
•    Africa is forecast to be the fastest growing region over the forecast period with a growth rate of 4.0 percent CAGR. The fastest growing freight route for Africa is the inter-Africa market (5.3 percent)
•    Not far behind Africa are the Middle East and Latin America, both with a CAGR of 3.8 percent and the Asia-Pacific at 3.5 percent a year, followed by Europe and North America at 2.4 percent CAGR and 2.7 percent CAGR, respectively
•    By 2017, the five largest international freight markets will be the United States, China Germany, Hong Kong and the UAE
•    Vietnam is expected to be the fastest growing country for air freight volumes over the forecasting horizon with a CAGR of 6.6 percent per annum, followed by Bangladesh (5.7 percent CAGR), Brazil (5.5 percent CAGR), Ethiopia (5.3 percent CAGR) and Peru (5.2 percent CAGR)
•    Freight carriage within the Asia-Pacific region will account for around 31 percent of the expected total increase in freight tonnage over the period
Freight Traffic Shares by Route Area:
•    The largest freight traffic shares in 2012 were within Asia Pacific (25.3 percent), Europe-Asia Pacific (12.1 percent), North and Mid-Pacific (10.5 percent) and North Atlantic (10.1 percent)
•    Looking ahead to 2017, within Asia Pacific is expected to increase its share by around one percentage point to 26.2 percent, with smaller gains (of around 0.3 percentage points) in both North America-Latin America (to 6.6 percent) and Middle East-Asia Pacific (to 6.5 percent)
•    Traffic shares Within Europe and in the North Atlantic are both expected to decrease by around 0.6 percentage points, to 8.3 percent and 9.5 percent respectively
•    Europe-Asia Pacific and North and Mid-Pacific are both expected to be down by around 0.3 percentage points in 2017 compared with 2012.

Wego partners with Cathay Pacific and Dragonair to embrace metasearch as part of distribution model

Wego, the leading travel metasearch site in the Asia Pacific and Middle East, today announced a partnership with Hong Kong’s official carriers Cathay Pacific and sister airline, Dragonair, which together serve over 170 destinations worldwide.

The Asian airlines are one of the first leading full service carriers to adopt and embrace metasearch as part of their distribution model from within the region, according to a statement issued by Wego.

Dean Wicks, Chief Flights Officer for Wego said: ‘We are thrilled that we are now able to offer Wego’s millions of monthly flight search users the opportunity to see the best airfares from Hong Kong’s leading carriers’. Cathay Pacific is Asia’s most awarded carrier having won the title of Asia’s Leading Airline six times, and currently holds the title of World’s Best Cabin Crew from the Skytrax World Airline Awards, as well as Asia’s Leading Airline Economy Class at the prestigious World Travel Awards.

Catherine Hornby, Manager, Digital Retail at Cathay Pacific pointed out: “Close partnership with metasearch engines, like Wego, is a cornerstone of our online distribution strategy and we want to be wherever customers are searching for travel options – it’s a great opportunity to present Cathay Pacific and Dragonair to a customer. Metasearch is a key channel leading to direct bookings and the opportunity for us to deliver against our world class service and product proposition”.

The integration of Cathay Pacific and Dragonair provides the widest choice of fare types available per flight segment, right down to last seat availability. With such detailed displays of comparisons, consumers now have more fares, seats and options for making bookings directly on the airlines’ websites.

“Our proposition for airlines is so strong, we do believe that we are the most effective form of distribution for a carrier other than direct bookings,” explained Wicks. “Carriers are given an option to be able to connect directly to Wego which by-passes the GDS providing a completely personal, direct and engaged connection with their customers. As the carrier becomes the merchant of record for all bookings, they increase top line sales revenue and have the ability of pre-flight sales of their ancillary services. While Low Cost Carriers still represent a smaller part of the Asian aviation industry, a large proportion already embrace the metasearch model, the success of which can be measured by double digit growth rates. Apart from expanding their reach to new target audiences, probably one of the most important of all gains for carriers is the direct relationship with the passenger which gives them Lifetime Value,” Wicks concurred.

“Travellers are becoming more tech-savvy and increasingly adopting Wego as the most efficient form of locating the best flights and accommodation options globally. We are thrilled to see our hard work is paying off with more Asian carriers directly connecting with Wego, and to have leading carriers from the Cathay Pacific group recognise travel metasearch as a part of their distribution mix is even more pleasing which directly benefits the consumer with more choice. Wego is also providing a ‘Route Sponsorship’ premium placement to Cathay Pacific and Dragonair which increases their marketing exposure on selected city pairs such as Singapore to Hong Kong, as well as 5th Freedom flights, such as Singapore to Bangkok, with additional branding and promotional messaging opportunities that are tied to the city pairs. We have been witnessing great results for this placement with carriers seeing substantial growth of both traffic and bookings after implementing this option,” Wicks added.

As one of Asia’s major hubs, Hong Kong will also benefit from the wider exposure to Wego’s millions of users. Wego’s extensive airline inventory is growing rapidly, and available at 52 localised country sites in 30 languages. Cathay Pacific and Dragonair flights are now live in Wego’s flight search at wego.com/flights.

Wego.com is the leading travel search engine across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East and is used by millions of travellers each month to save time, pay less and travel more.
