Homegrown auto component major, GreenFuel bags the Make in India Emerging Entrepreneurs 2018 award in the automobile category. At a gala event held in New Delhi recently Make in India Emerging Entrepreneurs Summit and Awards 2018, Akshay Kashyap, Founder and MD, received the award from Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan.

The Make in India Emerging Entrepreneur awards are an effort to recognise rising domestic players in manufacturing horizon of India. The winners were identified after a three month long intensive survey and were then shortlisted by an expert jury namely Uday Kotak, Aroon Purie, Manish Sabharwal, Hamitab Kant and Sanjay Nair.

Greenfuel specializes in product solutions for sustainable mobility. These solutions are based on their expertise in handling high pressure gaseous fuels, as well as ventures into exciting new areas of energy storage (batteries) and electromobility (battery-operated vehicles), all of which helped to bring the company out on top.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Kashyap said, “It is an honour to have our hardwork and passion recognized as a Make In India Emerging Entrepreneur. Greenfuel is one of the largest suppliers of automotive components to OEMs for vehicles that run on alternative fuels. The firm’s innovative approach has helped shape the modernization of CNG systems for OEM vehicles. In fact, Greenuel is the first player to introduce NGV filling systems in cars as well as automatic cylinder valves, and the only entity to do complete fuel delivery and storage systems for low-floor busses in India. What is more, the company has also ventured into the exciting new areas of energy storage (batteries) and electromobility (battery-operated vehicles). In a short time, it has emerged as one of the knowledge leader in Li-ion batteries.

Hero Indian Open 2015 Golf Tournament: BMW stands out as Luxury Mobility Partner

According to a media statement, the 51st edition of the four-day golf tournament also debuted as co-sanctioned with the European Tour this year. BMW Golf Cup International is one of the largest amateur golf tournament series in the world, with roots dating back to more than a quarter of a century to a British-based initiative that ran on its own for five years before going global. An exclusive, invitation-only event, BMW Golf Cup International is designed for BMW patrons providing the right mix for an exclusive social interaction. In India, BMW Golf Cup International has established itself as a leading tournament series and has seen humonnous success since its inception in 2008. India is one of the 50 countries that are taking part at the prestigious BMW Golf Cup International World Final for which more than 100,000 players compete across 1,000 qualifying tournaments all over the world.

BMW India dealers identify amateur golfers amongst BMW owners who are interested in participating in the tournament. The tournaments are held in accordance with the rules of the respective local golf club. This year, as part of BMW Golf Cup International 2015, seventeen tournaments will be held across India in fourteen cities – Kochi, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Raipur, Lucknow, Greater Noida and Gurgaon.

BMW Golf Cup International 2015 has three categories: A (for handicaps up to 12), B (for handicaps 13 – 28) and Ladies Category (for handicaps up to 28). The winners from each Indian city will compete at the National Final. The national winners will come together at the BMW Golf Cup International 2015 World Final.

Anirban Lahiri emerged the winner, while SSP Chawrasia was the runner up of the Hero Indian Open 2015. Leading golfers from across the globe competed at the tournament to win the total prize money worth $1.5 million. Miguel Angel Jimenez, the Spanish professional golfer and one of the charistmatic players in world golf brushed shoulder with other stalwarts from Europe and Asia including Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur, Thaworn Wiratchant, Gaganjeet Bhullar, Rikard karlberg and Arjun Atwal.

BMW i8 hybrid sports car launched in Mumbai for a price of Rs.2,29,00,000

The Chennai-based domestic arm of the German luxury car major, BMW has launched the first plug-in hybrid sports car, i8 in Mumbai today carrying a price tag of Rs.2,29,00,000.

The intelligent plug-in hybrid system in the BMW i8 combines the benefits of an electric motor and a petrol engine into an extraordinary driving experience: highest efficiency and maximum dynamics are simultaneously possible.

The electric drive, a powerful 96 kW (131 hp) lithium-ion battery, is located on the front axle. The rear axle is driven by BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with 170 kW (231 hp) of peak performance. The petrol engine combined with the electrical boost of the hybrid system guarantees typical BMW driving pleasure. Together, the two units deliver a total of 362 hp, accelerating the BMW i8 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds using all four wheels in the process. Running on battery power, it achieves the top speed of 120 km/h with a maximum range of 35 kilometers. In conjunction with the combustion engine, the electric motor takes the e-powered supercar to up to 250 km/h, and depending on driving style the driving range can be up to 600 kilometers. Another impressive characteristic is record low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, at an average of 47.45 km/l and emission of 50.36 g/km.

The BMW i8 was conceived from the very beginning to meet the demands of a hybrid sports car. A distinctive feature conceived exclusively for BMW i is the LifeDrive vehicle architecture which significantly contributes towards weight optimisation. It includes the Life module comprising passenger cell made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and the Drive module comprising an aluminium frame for the combustion engine and electric motor, the battery pack and the suspension. With BMW eDrive, the new BMW drive technology, the battery can be charged from any mains socket with a BMW i Wallbox or while driving. A standard accessory, the BMW i Wallbox enables the high-voltage battery to be recharged in less than two-and-a-half hours using a conventional 220 V mains socket.

The four-wheel drive system in the BMW i8 can deploy the power reserves through all four wheels for added traction and control. It uses the high-torque output of the electric motor and the performance of the petrol engine, which arrives via the specially modified six-speed Steptronic transmission. At any time, in any gear, the transmission collaborates perfectly with the engine, enabling it to develop its full power and efficiency.

The Intelligent Energy Management and the driving modes have been tuned perfectly to offer the driver a choice of five different driving modes: the ‘D’ transmission setting in COMFORT and ECO PRO mode, the SPORT mode and the eDRIVE mode for all-electric driving (with a choice of COMFORT or ECO PRO). The vehicle always starts in COMFORT mode, with a balance between sporty and efficient driving styles. Kerala Automobiles bags Rs 1.5 crore worth orders from ISRO for aerospace components

The loss making public sector entity, Kerala Automobiles Limited has taken a slew of initiatives to revive its fortunes. As part of that endeavour, the Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala based enterprise is contemplating on foraying into the uncharterred terrains, from a mere three-wheeler (auto rickshaw) manufacturer. The company has embarked on a new project to produce electric vehicles (battery operated vehicles) besides etablishing a Skill Development Research Centre. What is more, KAL has also won the contract from Indian Space Research Organisation for the supply of aerospace components worth Rs 1.5 crore. KAL will make these parts and supply to the various centres of ISRO.

KAL will maker battery operated vehicles such as 4,6,8 and 14-seaters. These vehicles will be put into use at archeological, cultural and heritage destinations. The company is targeting tour operators to sell these vehicles, according to E Abdul Latheef, Managing Director of KAL.

The official further said that the project was in the finishing stages. ‘We are contemplating on forging alliance with a Chennai-based private firm’, Latheef said and added that by 2015, a state of the art Skill Development Research Centre will come in place for training the youth in the automobile engineering. ‘We admit students with a basic diploma or degree and they will be adequately trained in automobile engineering”.

The ancillary units developed by the Company around the factory complex provide livelihood for hundreds of families. Since the start of production in 1984, KAL has manufactured and marketed more than 85,000 three-wheelers. KAL has distinguished itself as a force to reckon with in the Indian automotive horizon. Mallika Srinivasan honoured with Padma Shri for her efforts in improving the lot of farming community in India

Mallika Srinivasan, the Chairperson of the Chennai-based Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE), part of the Amalgamation Group, has been conferred with one of the prestigious awards, Padma Shri by the the Government of India.

Currently, the Chairperson and CEO of TAFE, Mallika took up the mantle after finishing her studies in the US. TAFE was earlier part of the Eicher group. The $ 1.6 billion tractor firm was set up way back in 1960 by the Eicher group and later on acquired by the Amalgamation Group, founded by Mallika’s father Sivasailam. TAFE is today the third largest tractor maker in the world and second largest in India by volumes. The company is present in excess of 82 countries that includes developed nations in Europe and the Americas. After she took over, TAFE has made giant strides and redefined the agriculture machinery business. Besides heading TAFE, Mallika is also on the Board of AGCO Corporation of the US, Tata Steel Limited and Tata Global Beverages. She is also the governing member of the Governing Board at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and the Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy.
Career
In a career spanning a quarter century, Mallika transformed TAFE as a quality mass producer of tractors, besides making it a lean and resilient entity that could easily weather the cyclicality of the tractor business. She laid major fillip on product and process development as the mantras. Mallika develped the core engineering prowess and made good use of the design and development into manfuacturing a slew of products for the overseas markets. In tandem with this, she had also strengthened alliance with AGCO for mutual growth, both in terms of compoents and in terms of tractor business. In fact, she led from the front in the acquisition of Eicher’s tractor and engines business through a separate arm and nurtured it sgrowth in terms of operations and profits.
Mallika has credited with ensuring  lofty positioning of the Massey Ferguson and Eicher products in the market and inspiring in developing the Eicher product range by increasing the horse powers that suited the exacting standards of the changing market scenario.  From a mediocre player, Mallika metamorphosed TAFE into its current status of $ 1.6 billion behemoth. Thecompany ow has wide spectrum of products including tractors, farm machinery, diesel engines, engineering plastics, hydraulic pumps and cylinders, batteries, automobile franchises and plantations.
Under her stewardship, TAFE was not only transformed itself to a profit making venture, but also one of the most financially viable tractor firms globally. She had assummed various positions in industry bodies including CII, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and more.
CSR
Mallika’s corporate social responsibility efforts are laudable, the latest being TAFE’s cooperation with the Chennai Traffic Police in bringing in awareness against honking by vehicles in Chennai. She has an avowed passion for making sure that development of education and healthcare in the country should be there in place. In fact, she has been instumental in backing entities like Sanakara Nethralaya, renowned eye care organisation, Adyar Cancer Hospital in Chennai and a slew of educational and healtchare facilities in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. What is more, Mallika has been a patron of arts through her support of one of the country’s leading musical tradition of Carnatic music through the Indira Sivasailam Endowment Fund.
Education
Mallika was always a brilliant student. She is a university gold medalist in Econometrics from the University of Madras. Mallika graduated as a member of the Dean’s Honour List and the Alpha Beta Gama Socity from the Wharton School of Business, Univesity of Pennsylvania, the US. She was ranked as one of its top 125 most successful alumni.

Mallika has won several recognitions both in her career as well as for her philantropical pursuits. In 2011, Mallika won the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernst and Young. Several accolades came calling Mallika such as Woman Leader of the Year Award from Forbes India, another recognition from Forbes Asia as one of the top 50 Asian Power Businesswomen, ranking second among India’s Most Powerful Women in Business by Fortune Asia. She has also been named among the six Most Powerful Women of India Inc by Business Today magazine. The Asian Business Leadership Forum conferred her with ABLF Woman of Power Award. And that is not all, NDTV Profit, one of the leading business television channel conferred her special honour of Business Thought Leader of the Year 2012 Award.

Amara Raja Batteries registers net sales of Rs 2,552 crore for nine months ended 2013

Amara Raja Batteries Limited, India’s leading Industrial and Automotive Battery major (BSE Code: 500008 & NSE Code: AMARAJABAT) today reported net sales (excluding other income) of Rs 2,552 crore for the nine months ended December 31, 2013 as agaist Rs 2,160 crore clocked in the year ago period, thus registering 18 percent growth. according to a company statement, the Profit Before Tax (PBT) stood at Rs.416 crore in comparision with Rs 330 crore logged in the corresponding year of 2012, up 26 percent growth.

Automotive battery
The Automotive battery business reported double digit growth in revenue, aided by strong volume expansion in two-wheeler batteries and marginal volume growth in four-wheeler batteries. While the OEM demand continued to be sluggish, an early sign of demand slowdown in four-wheeler replacement was visible in Q3. The trading volume in home UPS business suffered due to unfavorable season. The ongoing capacity expansions in two-wheeler and four-wheeler battery product lines are progressing as envisaged.

Industrial battery
The Industrial battery business reported flat volume for the quarter compared to previous year, due to capacity constraints and subdued demand for UPS batteries. However the revenues grew in double digit owing to inflation and better product mix. The firm continues to focus on enhancing the quality of business through various initiatives in the market place. In the UPS segment, the company expanded the Quanta® product range with the introduction of 12V-120 Ah and 12V-150 Ah batteries. Now, the Company has widest product range for optimal battery sizing by the UPS OEM’s and other customers.
The company has commissioned on January 22, 2014 the modern and fully integrated MVRLA battery plant in a new location at Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. The new plant was inaugurated by Brian Kesseler, President – Power Solutions, Johnson Controls Inc, in the presence of Dr.Ramachandra N. Galla, Chairman and Jayadev Galla, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, other directors on the board and the leadership team of Amara Raja Batteries. The trial runs and product validation processes are under way. The plant is expected to commence supplies in full scale from March 2014 to support the growth momentum.

Commenting on the Q3 performance, Jayadev Galla, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Amara Raja Batteries said: “It is heartening to deliver a consistent good performance despite challenging economy, volatile rupee and sluggish demand in the automotive OEM and UPS sectors. However, an early sign of slowdown in growth rate of four-wheeler automotive replacement demand requires close watch and innovative approach to sustain double digit volume growth. The successful completion of MVRLA capacity expansion and other ongoing capacity expansions in various product lines, will provide enough momentum to the growth in line with our strategic plan for the five years period leading to FY19”.
